Small Talk 12 - Pausing
As the sun reaches the equinox, I’ve been taking a little break from Small Talk. Sometimes life imposes new priorities. But I did want to say I haven’t forgotten about you. Even the busiest of times allow for a little small talk—Hey, how’s it going, listen I don’t want to keep you, just wanted to drop off this casserole. So I thought I’d share a couple things. The first is just a suggestion…
Remember to pause, and turn your attention to the arrival of Spring. Our attention is the most precious thing we have—and we control it. Take a walk and look around. Every year, nature emerges from its long sleep, regardless of whether we notice. But if you do notice, you’ll join a miraculous event that unfolds moment by moment, day by day, each one a little different. This week I saw a yellow-rumped warbler in a black walnut. It was easy to identify, because it’s the only bird with that flash of yellow above the tail, and they’re among the first warblers to return north. I saw wild cherry trees unfolding their buds. In the woods I saw a glade of bluebells, just beginning to bloom. It was late afternoon and the sun was winding down. When I walked out along the Salt Fork river, the bluebells were withdrawn. But as I walked back, the last light warmed them, and the flowers emerged. I paused, and there it was.
The second thing is a list of previous Small Talks. You might have noticed that I’m using a new email account. This one shouldn’t be so vulnerable to spam filters. Since I know some of you have missed previous posts, here’s a handy list. If you like, share it with a friend. I’d be grateful for a moment of their attention.
I’ll be back soon with fresh topics to discuss!
Have a good one,
Kipling Knox
